The Chadwick Bay Softball Bash in Dunkirk, New York, brought the community to life over the weekend despite less-than-ideal weather conditions. Fifty-eight teams from various locations gathered in the city to compete in 109 individual games across four age groups: 10U, 12U, 14U, and 16U. The tournament culminated in an exciting championship game in the 16U division between the Lancaster Heat and the Smash It Sports Vipers from Rochester.
The championship game between the Lancaster Heat and the Smash It Sports Vipers was a thrilling back-and-forth affair. The Vipers held a 9-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when Lauren Patterson of the Heat stepped up to the plate with two runners on base. Patterson delivered a clutch hit, sending the ball over the center field fence to tie the game. The Heat then scored another run to win the game in walk-off fashion, much to the excitement of the crowd.
In the 14U division, Revenge Softball emerged victorious, showcasing their dominance throughout the tournament. The 12U championship game was a close battle, with the Southtowns Slammers defeating 814 Elite of Erie, Pennsylvania, by a score of 2-1. The 10U division saw the Lou Gehrig Lasers-Welsch claim the championship behind stellar pitching that allowed only three runs throughout the tournament.
Tournament director Kory Ahlstrom expressed his excitement about the high level of competition and the thrilling conclusion to the event. He commended the City Parks and Recreation staff, Mayor Kate Wdowdiaz, and the Dunkirk High School Football program for their contributions to the success of the tournament. The community support and positive feedback from participants and spectators highlighted the success of the event.
Local teams also made their mark at the tournament, with the Dunkirk LL All Stars, Chadwick Bay teams, and Fredonia Fury teams showcasing their talent and competitive spirit. The teams from Fredonia, in particular, put on strong performances, with the 12U Fury girls reaching the Silver Bracket finals.
