Bulletin Board is a weekly roundup of education news from the Coachella Valley and beyond. This week, the focus is on the first day of school at Palm Springs High School and other educational updates in the region.

The first day of school is always an exciting time for students and staff at Palm Springs High School. The Desert Sun had the opportunity to sit down with Principal Michael Ventura to get an inside look at what the first day of school is like for everyone involved. From the nervous excitement of students to the preparations made by teachers and administrators, the first day sets the tone for the rest of the school year.

As students and staff in the Palm Springs Unified School District return for the 2024-25 school year, the back-to-school season is in full swing. Classes at Desert Sands Unified School District will begin on Aug. 20, followed by Coachella Valley Unified School District on Aug. 22. The anticipation and hope for a successful and memorable school year are palpable among students like fifth grader Alanis Gutierrez from Agua Caliente Elementary School.

In this week’s education roundup, College of the Desert is gearing up to kickstart the new academic year with its inaugural Roadrunner Rally at the newly expanded Indio Campus. The event will offer students the opportunity to register for courses, apply for financial aid, meet with counselors, and explore the campus. Additionally, the Riverside County Office of Education is hosting an Ethnic Studies Summit in late August to support local districts in developing high school ethnic studies courses.

One exciting opportunity for local students is the Mexican American Dream Scholarship, offered by the Council of Mexican Federations in North America. This scholarship is intended to support students of Mexican descent who are pursuing higher education and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Recipients of the scholarship will also have the opportunity to complete volunteer work at the COFEM Valle de Coachella office.

As the new school year begins, it’s important to stay informed about the latest education news and opportunities in the Coachella Valley. Whether it’s the first day of school celebrations, scholarship opportunities, or educational summits, there are plenty of ways for students and educators to get involved and make the most of the upcoming academic year. Stay tuned for more updates and stories in the next edition of Bulletin Board.
