Eating Animal Protein is Not Required

Dr. Peter Attia, a Canadian author and physician, recently discussed plant-based diets during an appearance on The School of Greatness podcast. The episode, released in May 2023, was reshared on Instagram as part of a collaboration between plant-based naturopathic doctor Dr. Matthew Nagra and nonprofit Food Facts. In the clip, Dr. Attia acknowledged that humans “don’t need to eat animal protein,” but he also made several claims about plant-based diets that Dr. Nagra criticized.

Podcast host Lewis Howes asked Dr. Attia whether animal protein is “better” protein, to which Dr. Attia replied that it’s “more efficient protein.” He emphasized that people shouldn’t get hung up on the plant vs. animal protein debate, but he also mentioned that individuals on plant-based diets may need to pay more attention to their intake of amino acids.

Dr. Nagra responded to Dr. Attia’s claims by addressing three key points. Firstly, he explained that cooking plant protein sources can increase digestibility, but this is a common practice for all types of protein sources. He also noted that protein-rich plant foods like tofu and vegan meat are already precooked. Additionally, Dr. Nagra stated that tracking individual amino acids is unnecessary for most people, as a varied plant-based diet can provide all essential amino acids.

Regarding Dr. Attia’s assertion that individuals on plant-based diets need to consume more protein than those on animal-based diets, Dr. Nagra clarified that as long as individuals are consuming the same amount of protein, the source of protein (plant-based or animal-based) does not significantly impact muscle and strength gains. He highlighted that animal protein sources, particularly red meat, have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and colorectal cancer.

In conclusion, Dr. Nagra questioned which diet truly makes life easier in the long run, considering the potential health risks associated with consuming animal protein. The discussion between Dr. Attia and Dr. Nagra sheds light on the ongoing debate surrounding plant-based diets and the misconceptions that exist regarding protein sources. It emphasizes the importance of a balanced and varied diet, regardless of whether it is plant-based or animal-based.
