I Sampled 7 Healthy Fast Food Meals – Here’s What I’d Reorder

Share

Fast food has long been a convenient option for those on the go, but the typical burger and fries can leave you feeling weighed down and guilty. Luckily, many fast-food restaurants have started offering healthier alternatives like wraps, grilled chicken, and salads. But the big question remains—do these healthier fast-food options actually taste good? After all, who wants to spend money on a meal that doesn’t satisfy your taste buds?

To answer this question, I took it upon myself to taste test some of the healthiest menu items from popular fast-food spots. With the guidance of registered dietitians Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, and Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, I sampled seven different meals and shared my honest thoughts on their taste and nutritional value. Surprisingly, out of the seven meals I tried, there was only one that I didn’t enjoy.

It’s important to note that while these healthier options are better for you than the typical fast-food fare, they still may be high in sodium, fat, sugar, and calories. However, there is a significant difference between indulging in a 1,100-calorie burger and opting for a 440-calorie salad.

Let’s dive into the rankings of the healthier fast-food meals I tried, starting with the best option:

1. Taco Bell Cantina Chicken Power Bowl:
With 490 calories and 25 grams of protein, this bowl is a balanced and nutritious choice. The combination of seasoned rice, black beans, slow-roasted chicken, pico de gallo, guacamole, and avocado ranch sauce made for a satisfying and flavorful meal.

2. Wendy’s Apple Pecan Salad:
At 440 calories and 31 grams of protein, this salad offers a good balance of nutrients. The generous portions of chicken, apples, dried cranberries, and toasted pecans made for a delicious and filling meal.

3. McDonald’s Fruit and Maple Oatmeal:
With 320 calories and 4 grams of fiber, this oatmeal is a healthy breakfast option. The blend of diced apples, cranberry raisin blend, and brown sugar added a touch of sweetness to this creamy and satisfying meal.

4. Chipotle Lifestyle Wholesome Bowl:
At 460 calories and 35 grams of protein, this bowl is a great choice for those watching their carb intake. The fresh ingredients like lettuce, chicken, fajita veggies, salsa, and guacamole made for a flavorful and nutritious meal.

5. Jimmy Johns Mediterranean Wrap:
With 760 calories and 37 grams of protein, this wrap offers a unique blend of flavors from hummus, olive tapenade, feta cheese, and fresh veggies. The spinach tortilla added a nutritious twist to this savory meal.

6. Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Sandwich:
At 390 calories and 28 grams of protein, this sandwich is a leaner option compared to fried chicken. While it may not have the same flavor as the original sandwich, the addition of lettuce, tomato, and Honey BBQ sauce made it a tasty choice.

7. Dunkin’ Egg and Cheese on English Muffin:
With 460 calories and 19 grams of protein, this sandwich falls short in terms of flavor. While it may be a lower-calorie option, the lack of taste and blandness left much to be desired.

In conclusion, while fast food may not always be the healthiest choice, there are certainly better options available for those looking to make more nutritious decisions on the go. By opting for lighter meals like salads, wraps, and bowls, you can enjoy a satisfying and tasty meal without compromising your health goals. Next time you find yourself at a fast-food restaurant, consider trying one of these healthier options for a guilt-free and delicious meal.
