Woodford County Director of Special Education Tracey Francis, Berea Independent Director of Special Education Jennifer Whitt, and Kentucky School for the Deaf Principal Lynn Petrey were recently honored with the prestigious 2024 Grissom Award for Innovation in Special Education. This award, presented at the Kentucky Board of Education’s meeting on Aug. 8, recognizes outstanding dedication to improving student achievement for individuals with disabilities. The Purpose in Action Parker Hannifin Collaboration Team, led by these remarkable leaders, was commended for their efforts in increasing accessibility for individuals with disabilities at the Parker Hannifin manufacturing plant in Lexington.

The Grissom Award is a symbol of leadership, commitment, and service in promoting high student achievement through instructional equity and closing the achievement gap for all children. Petrey and Elaine Bailey, public information officer for Woodford County Schools, nominated Francis, Whitt, and the Purpose in Action Collaboration Team for their dedication to enhancing the educational experiences of students with learning or behavior differences. Their innovative project, funded by a Purpose in Action grant, marked a significant milestone in Kentucky public education and Parker Hannifin history.

The project involved students with and without disabilities collaborating to design and create an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant workstation at Parker Hannifin. This initiative not only promoted inclusivity and accessibility but also provided valuable postsecondary opportunities for students with disabilities. By working alongside engineers and human resources professionals, students gained hands-on experience and developed job-ready skills, creating a talent pipeline for future employment.

The impact of this project was profound, as students with disabilities found their voices and gained confidence in their abilities. Students without disabilities also experienced a shift in perspective, becoming more aware of the challenges faced by their peers with disabilities. The collaborative effort between students, educators, and industry professionals not only improved accessibility at Parker Hannifin but also fostered empathy, compassion, and a sense of community among all participants.

Francis described the project as one of the most rewarding experiences of her career, emphasizing the importance of empowering students and giving them a platform to be heard. Whitt expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the innovative nature of the project and its positive impact on student learning. Petrey acknowledged the dedication of the educators and staff involved in the project, as well as the support of Superintendent Danny Adkins, in ensuring its success.

The Grissom Award for Innovation in Special Education pays tribute to the late associate commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education, who dedicated her career to advocating for students with disabilities. Through their exemplary leadership and commitment to inclusive education, Francis, Whitt, and Petrey exemplify the spirit of the award and the values it represents. Their collaborative efforts have not only transformed the educational experiences of students in their districts but have also set a standard for innovation and excellence in special education.
