August 13, 2024 marks the beginning of a new academic year as students and teachers return to classrooms across the country. As the education landscape continues to evolve, Montclair State University has a team of faculty experts who are available to provide insights and commentary on a wide range of education-related topics. From teacher training to student mental health, sex education to the use of AI in the classroom, these experts offer valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing educators today.

Teacher training and diversity in education are crucial areas of focus for many educators. Associate Professor Mayida Zaal, co-director of the Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, is dedicated to building a diverse teacher workforce through participatory action research and understanding the experiences of immigrant-origin youth. Professor Carlos McCray specializes in urban school leadership, organizational diversity, and educational equity, with a particular interest in addressing the high attrition rate of urban K-12 students due to suspensions and expulsions. Professor Zoe Burkholder, an expert in educational equality and antiracist education, sheds light on the underrepresentation of teachers of color in public schools.

Comprehensive sex education, student mental health, and bullying are also critical issues in education today. Professor Lisa Lieberman, an expert in sex education and health policy, has conducted groundbreaking research showing the benefits of comprehensive sex education in preventing child sex abuse and intimate partner violence. Professor Stephanie Silvera, a public health expert, focuses on epidemiology, cancer outcomes, and racial disparities in health. Professor Jeremy Fox specializes in child mental health, particularly anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. Professor Christopher Donoghue’s research on adolescent bullying and prejudice provides valuable insights into how students cope with these challenges.

The integration of AI in the classroom and adaptive learning technologies are transforming the way students learn and teachers teach. Professor Emily Isaacs, an expert in writing pedagogy and assessment, explores the use of technology in higher education to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

As the new academic year begins, Montclair State University’s faculty experts are poised to offer valuable insights and commentary on a wide range of education-related topics. Their expertise and research contribute to the ongoing dialogue on improving teaching practices, supporting student well-being, and creating inclusive learning environments.
