Summer is a time for kids to enjoy the great outdoors, make new friends, and engage in fun activities that keep them active and entertained. At Fort Drum, New York, children are taking full advantage of the Child and Youth Services’ Sports and Fitness Summer Camps to showcase their athleticism and develop their skills in a variety of sports.

Josh Herzig, the CYS Youth Sports and Fitness assistant director and camp coach, believes that participating in sports is a great way for kids to stay active and have fun during the summer months. He emphasizes the importance of offering a diverse range of sports camps to keep children engaged and excited about trying new activities. Each week, a different camp is offered, giving kids the opportunity to explore various sports and discover new interests.

One of the popular camps at Fort Drum is the Archery Camp, where children learn the basics of archery and practice their skills in a safe and supportive environment. Safety is always a top priority, with coaches ensuring that students understand and follow all the necessary rules and precautions. The camp not only teaches kids how to shoot a bow but also instills values such as good sportsmanship and teamwork.

During a typical day at Archery Camp, kids are quizzed on various aspects of the sport, such as the reasons people shoot bows and the different types of bows used in archery. The campers, ranging from beginners to experienced shooters, enjoy the challenge of improving their accuracy and competing in friendly competitions. For many, the highlight of the camp is hitting targets and even popping balloons for extra points.

In addition to Archery Camp, Fort Drum offers a variety of other sports camps, including Soccer, Lacrosse, Golf, and Mountaineering. Each camp focuses on teaching fundamental skills, building confidence, and fostering a love for the sport. Kids have the opportunity to try new activities, challenge themselves, and have fun in a supportive and encouraging environment.

One of the unique aspects of the summer camps at Fort Drum is the opportunity for kids to participate in off-post activities, such as visiting an archery range in a forest setting or taking on a high ropes course. These experiences allow children to step out of their comfort zones, conquer fears, and build resilience while having a great time with their peers.

As the summer comes to a close, there are still opportunities for kids to join the summer camp program at Fort Drum. The upcoming Baseball Camp and Punt, Pass, and Kick Football Camp offer children the chance to learn new skills, make friends, and have a blast playing sports. For more information about the summer camps, interested parents can contact CYS Sports and Fitness or visit their location on Chapel Drive.

Overall, the Child and Youth Services’ Sports and Fitness Summer Camps at Fort Drum provide a valuable and enriching experience for kids of all ages. Through engaging in sports, children not only improve their physical fitness and athletic abilities but also develop important life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance. The camps offer a supportive and inclusive environment where kids can thrive, have fun, and create lasting memories that will stay with them long after the summer ends.
