The Maui News recently reported on the Hawaii Education Association (HEA) awarding scholarships to two Maui residents, highlighting their dedication to improving education in Hawaii. The HEA, a statewide nonprofit organization, aims to support students and educators in public, charter, and private schools.

One of the recipients of the scholarship is Dillon Gunderson, a Maui High School graduate from Kahului. Despite initially aspiring to become a chef, Gunderson’s perspective shifted when he met advisor Rondy Arquero in his first year of high school. Arquero emphasized the impact teachers have on children’s lives, inspiring Gunderson to pursue a career in teaching. Throughout high school, Gunderson volunteered in various school activities and programs, including the Education Advisory Board at Maui High School. With the $500 scholarship, he plans to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree in elementary education at the University of Hawaii Maui College, with the goal of eventually transferring to the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Another scholarship recipient is Kristen Takamiya, a Wailuku resident who will be receiving a Bachelor of Education degree specializing in music from kindergarten to grade 12 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Takamiya is currently a student teacher at Maryknoll School and Ilima Intermediate School. She strongly believes in the importance of music education, viewing it as a universal language that every student should have access to. Takamiya is actively involved in various music education associations, including the National Association of Music Education, Hawaii Music Educators Association, and Hawaii Orff Schulwerk Association.

Statewide, HEA awarded a total of 12 scholarships in six categories, amounting to $18,495. These scholarships aim to support educators and students in furthering their education and professional development, ultimately enhancing their ability to provide a quality learning experience for students.

The Maui News article showcases the commitment of HEA to investing in individuals who are passionate about education and dedicated to making a difference in the lives of students. Through these scholarships, HEA is not only supporting the recipients’ academic pursuits but also fostering a culture of excellence in education across Hawaii.
