UI soccer boasts a plethora of offensive options

Share

In the world of Illinois soccer, goal scorers have always been a key component of success. From Tara Hurless to Jannelle Flaws, the Illini have seen some incredible talent over the years. However, in recent seasons, goals have been harder to come by for the team. That is, until now.

This season, the Illinois soccer team is off to a blazing start, leading the Big Ten in goals scored with eight goals by eight different players. While they may not have a standout scorer like Flaws or Hurless, the team’s collective goal-scoring ability is shining through.

Head coach Janet Rayfield has been instrumental in shaping this year’s team into a more potent offensive force. With a focus on finishing in every practice session and increasing the speed of play, the Illini are showing a new level of attacking prowess.

One player who has been key to this offensive resurgence is Mya Archibald. The sophomore defender, who will be representing Canada at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, has been a force on both ends of the field. Her two assists so far this season have been crucial in setting up goals for her teammates.

Rayfield credits the team’s disciplined approach in the final third for their success. With a clear purpose in their ball movement and positioning, the Illini are creating more scoring opportunities than ever before. Trust and discipline are the core values that guide this team, and it shows in their cohesive play on the field.

One of the standout performers this season has been Lia Howard, who scored the winning goal in a recent match against DePaul. But it’s not just the returning players who are making an impact. Redshirt freshman Ashley Stellon, senior Alyssa Weede, freshman Lauren Seppi, senior Sarah Hiestand, and junior Ellen Persson have all notched their first career goals this season, showcasing the depth of talent on the team.

Junior forward Sarah Foley sums up the team’s mentality best, stating, “This team is so accountable. I trust every single one with my whole heart. I just know when there’s an opportunity, they’re putting the ball in the back of the net.” With a mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers, the Illinois soccer team is poised for a successful season filled with goals and victories.
