The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is proud to announce the launch of a new master’s degree program in music business, building upon the success of its renowned undergraduate program in the recording and entertainment industries. Named after Martin Bandier ’62, a distinguished music publishing executive and University Life Trustee, both degree programs aim to provide students with a comprehensive education in the ever-evolving music business landscape.

The Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries, the undergraduate counterpart to the new master’s program, has consistently been recognized as one of the leading music business programs in the country. With a focus on hands-on experiences, cutting-edge skills training, and access to a vast network of alumni, the undergraduate program has set a high standard for music business education.

The newly introduced Bandier music business master’s program will continue this tradition of excellence by offering students a multidisciplinary education that prepares them for a successful career in the music industry. Scheduled to launch in fall 2025, the program will cover a wide range of topics, including music rights, royalties, deal-making strategies, and industry-specific knowledge across various sectors such as labels, publishing, management, streaming, and live events.

Led by Bill Werde, the director of the Bandier undergraduate program and a former editorial director of Billboard, the master’s program will provide students with a solid foundation in music law, copyright, social media, and data analytics. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to spend a semester in Los Angeles, immersing themselves in the heart of the music industry and gaining valuable hands-on experience.

According to Werde, the new master’s program aims to equip students with the skills, connections, and knowledge necessary to thrive in the competitive music business landscape. By offering a comprehensive curriculum and access to industry professionals, the program seeks to empower students to become future leaders in the music industry.

Dean Mark J. Lodato of the Newhouse School emphasizes the program’s commitment to providing students with a first-class education in the recording and entertainment industries. With the support of Martin Bandier and the dedication of the faculty, the program aims to offer college graduates a unique opportunity to acquire the skills and experiences needed to succeed in the dynamic and thriving music business.

In conclusion, the launch of the Bandier music business master’s program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications represents a significant milestone in the school’s commitment to excellence in music business education. With a focus on practical skills, industry connections, and cutting-edge knowledge, the program is poised to shape the next generation of music industry leaders.
