Summersville, West Virginia, is set to see the development of a new recreational complex that promises to be a game-changer for the community. The groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the 128-acre Summerville Recreational Complex took place recently, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the town.

Mayor Robert Shafer expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing that the complex is primarily being built with the youth in mind. He highlighted the potential for the facility to boost tourism in the area, ultimately benefiting the local economy. The mayor’s vision for a state-of-the-art complex that caters to the needs of the community is set to become a reality in the coming years.

The first two phases of the project will focus on the construction of 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as a soccer complex. Mayor Shafer acknowledged the long-standing need for improved facilities for the soccer community in Summersville, noting the potential for hosting larger tournaments and attracting more teams to the area. The addition of these amenities is sure to enhance the recreational opportunities available to residents and visitors alike.

Future phases of the complex will include a baseball/softball facility, basketball and pickleball courts, an all-inclusive playground, and a dog park. These additions will further diversify the recreational options available at the complex, catering to a wide range of interests and age groups within the community.

Despite facing challenges in securing external funding for the project, Mayor Shafer remains determined to see it through to completion. The city is currently financing the construction with up to $12 million in bonds, with plans to repay the investment over time. While efforts to secure state and federal funding have been unsuccessful thus far, the city remains committed to exploring all avenues for financial support.

Mayor Shafer’s optimism and the city’s financial stability bode well for the successful completion of the project. With construction set to begin this fall and a projected completion date in mid to late 2026, the Summerville Recreational Complex is poised to become a cornerstone of the community for years to come. As the project progresses, residents can look forward to a vibrant hub of recreational activity that will enhance the quality of life in Summersville and attract visitors from near and far.
