Fashion’s Role in Narrating the 2024 Election: From the DNC and Beyond

Share

Fashion and politics have always been intertwined, with clothing choices often serving as a form of communication that can convey powerful messages. During a presidential election year, the significance of a candidate’s outfit or a collective style statement from a group in the crowd can speak volumes about their values, priorities, and intentions. The 2024 Democratic National Convention was a prime example of this intersection of style and politics, where every sartorial choice seemed to carry deeper meaning.

One standout moment at the convention was Ella Emhoff’s casual outfit on the first night, which sparked controversy among conservatives. Designed by Gen Z designer Joe Ando, Emhoff’s attire was seen as a representation of young people and their progressive ideals. Similarly, Kamala Harris’s choice of a tan Chloé suit on the first night may have been a nod to Barack Obama’s infamous tan suit from 2014, symbolizing hope and breaking traditional norms. Her navy suit for the historic nomination acceptance was seen as a strategic move to convey her readiness for the job, while still subtly nodding to female empowerment through the choice of a luxury brand with a female designer at the helm.

The crowd at the convention also made their voices heard through their fashion choices. Uncommitted Democrats wearing Keffiyehs showed support for Palestinians in Gaza, while sold-out camo hats became a symbol of support for the Harris-Walz ticket. DIY merch, such as shirts reading “Twinks for Kamala,” and Taylor Swift concert-esque bracelets, further highlighted the intersection of fashion and politics in conveying messages and building solidarity.

Throughout the campaign trail, we can expect to see Harris, Walz, and their families making sartorial nods to their political priorities. From subtle choices like Doug Emhoff’s sneaker and suit combo to more controversial ones like Harris’s $60k Tiffany necklace, fashion will continue to play a significant role in shaping their public image and messaging. Even the Trump family, with their bulky jackets and MAGA hats, use fashion to convey toughness and commitment to their base.

The lesson here is clear: fashion and beauty are not just superficial aspects of politics but powerful tools for communication and messaging. By paying attention to the clothing choices of politicians and those around them, we can gain valuable insights into their values, priorities, and intentions. In a world where image matters, fashion can often speak louder than words and convey messages that words alone cannot express.
