The Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education (PIE) Program has had a remarkable year in 2023-2024, building on the success of the previous year and achieving significant growth in various key areas. The program saw a 43.4% increase in the number of units registering a local PIE Program, with 208 units participating. Additionally, there was a 63.9% increase in school partnerships formed, totaling 359 partnerships. The number of students participating in PIE activities also rose by 21.8%, reaching a total of 70,248 students. Coast Guard members showed their dedication by volunteering in greater numbers, with a 43.7% increase to 2,882 volunteers. These volunteers collectively contributed 9,643 hours of their time to support students, marking a 59.3% increase in volunteer hours compared to the previous year.
The surge in participation and impact of the PIE Program has generated increased interest both within the Coast Guard and in the community. The benefits of the program are evident, with students receiving valuable instruction, guidance, and support, while Coast Guard members serve as role models and make a positive impact in the lives of students. Teachers, schools, and communities benefit from additional resources to nurture future leaders, and the Coast Guard enhances its visibility and reputation as a top employer.
To build on the success of the previous year, the PIE Program is planning to host a PIE Coordinator Orientation and introduce a new orientation for commanding officers in the coming months. The program will continue to offer virtual presentations on educational resources for youth through its national partner, the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA). Additionally, PIE will support reading and mentoring programs, encourage media engagement, and focus on how Coast Guard role models impact recruitment efforts.
The success of the PIE Program has led to an increase in inquiries from community-based organizations, associations, and schools. PIE coordinators and Coast Guard partners will be present at various events, including NAMEPA Regional Workshops, the Coast Guard’s Employee Engagement Day, and annual conferences for organizations like the American School Counselor Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The Coast Guard expresses gratitude to all schoolteachers, administrators, staff, PIE Coordinators, and units that contributed to the success of the program in the past year.
