A trip to Wisconsin completely changed my perspective on visiting the Midwest

Share

When it comes to travel destinations in the United States, the Midwest may not be the first region that comes to mind for many people. However, after seeing stunning photos of Door County, Wisconsin, in the fall, my perspective on the Midwest completely changed. The vibrant colors of the foliage, the charming towns, and the warm hospitality of the locals all combined to create an unforgettable experience that has left me eager to explore more hidden gems across the country.

One of the main draws of Door County is its incredible fall foliage. The images of lush trees in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green that seemed to stretch on endlessly captured my imagination and inspired me to book a trip to see it in person. Arriving in late October, I was greeted by the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan from my balcony at The Water Street Inn, a historic hotel that exuded charm and character.

One of the best ways to experience the fall foliage in Door County is by taking a ride on the Door County Trolley. As I rode through the streets, the wet pavement reflected the colors of the towering maple trees, creating a magical atmosphere that I had only seen in pictures before. Exploring nature preserves like The Ridges Sanctuary and Whitefish Dunes State Park allowed me to immerse myself in the beauty of the landscape and appreciate the changing seasons in a whole new way.

In addition to the stunning scenery, Door County also offers a rich cultural experience. From climbing to the top of the Cana Island Lighthouse to exploring the quaint downtown areas of Fish Creek and Egg Harbor, there was no shortage of things to see and do. One of the highlights of my trip was participating in a traditional fish boil, a local tradition that brings the community together for a delicious meal cooked over an open fire.

What truly set Door County apart for me was the sense of pride and community among the locals. Meeting people who had spent their entire lives on the peninsula and hearing their stories of why they chose to stay made me appreciate the area even more. Their dedication to preserving the region’s heritage while embracing new opportunities has helped Door County thrive and become a destination that is truly special.

As I reflect on my time in Door County, I am reminded that there are countless hidden gems waiting to be discovered across the United States. While popular tourist destinations certainly have their appeal, there is something truly magical about exploring lesser-known towns and regions like Door County. This trip has inspired me to approach travel with a more open mind and a willingness to explore new places, whether it’s in the Midwest or beyond.

In conclusion, my visit to Door County, Wisconsin, in the fall was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the beauty and charm of the Midwest. From the stunning fall foliage to the welcoming locals, every aspect of the trip left a lasting impression on me. I now understand why Lonely Planet named the Midwest one of the top travel destinations for 2024, and I can’t wait to continue exploring the hidden treasures that the United States has to offer.
