Australia Now Offers Faster US Travel with Global Entry

Share

On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, a significant announcement was made that will benefit Australian travelers heading to the United States. Starting in January 2025, Australians will have the opportunity to participate in the US Global Entry program, allowing them to expedite customs and immigration clearance at American airports. This initiative marks a major improvement in travel convenience for frequent flyers between the two countries.

The Global Entry program, currently available for pre-approved, low-risk travelers, will be accessible to eligible Australian travelers from January 2025, with plans to expand to all eligible applicants later in the year. Participants in the program will also gain access to the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) PreCheck program, which offers quicker security checks for domestic US flights.

Global Entry members will be able to use designated lanes at airports where technology verifies their membership with a photo. They will then follow on-screen instructions and meet a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer to complete the process. The program requires a background check and interview to ensure the safety and security of all participants.

This new information-sharing arrangement between Australia and the United States represents a major step toward implementing the Global Entry program. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, highlighted the significance of this program in strengthening the relationship between the two countries and fostering greater commercial ties. Minister for Home Affairs, Tony Burke MP, emphasized the benefits that eligible Australians will experience in terms of expedited immigration and customs clearance channels upon arrival in the US.

The agreement was welcomed by Melissa Elf, Flight Centre Travel Group Global Corporate Chief Operating Officer, who noted the positive impact it will have on corporate travelers. With the airbridge between Australia and the United States being critical for business travel, imports, and exports, the Global Entry program will streamline the travel process and enhance the economic partnership between the two countries.

Elf also highlighted the growth in travel for the education sector, which has increased significantly year-on-year. She noted a shift in top US business travel destinations among Australians, with New York surging to second place behind Los Angeles. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Elf remains optimistic about the future of travel between Australia and the United States, expecting more choice and competition to drive further growth in the industry.

In conclusion, the introduction of the US Global Entry program for Australian travelers represents a significant milestone in enhancing travel convenience and strengthening the ties between the two countries. With streamlined entry processes and expedited clearance channels, travelers can look forward to a more efficient and seamless travel experience between Australia and the United States.
