Fairmont High School in Fairmont, Minnesota, recently hosted its annual Activities Fair and Fall Pep Fest, giving high school students and their families a chance to explore the various sports and extracurricular activities available at the school. The event took place in the ‘Horseshoe’ entrance at FHS, where tables were set up with demonstrations from sports teams, team captains, and coaches providing information and recruiting potential teammates. The event kicked off with the Fairmont Fight Song and a cheerleading performance, setting the tone for an exciting evening.
Activities Director Mat Mahoney, who has been serving Fairmont Area Schools for over 10 years, expressed his excitement for the event, calling it a great way to kick off the school year. The fair showcased a diverse range of activities, from sports teams in uniform to non-academic clubs like Debate, FFA, and Robotics. Students and families had the opportunity to learn more about each activity and interact with team members and coaches.
One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the fall production, “Grease,” a popular musical set in the 1950s high school era. Students were encouraged to audition for roles in the production, even if they were involved in fall sports. The announcement was met with enthusiasm from the student body, adding to the excitement of the evening.
Throughout the event, team captains and coaches highlighted the benefits of joining their respective teams, emphasizing teamwork, dedication, and the sense of community that comes with being part of a sports team or club. The Pep Fest closed with a final rendition of the Fairmont Fight Song by the band and a cheerleading routine, bringing the evening to a spirited conclusion.
The location of the event, in the spacious ‘Horseshoe’ entrance of the school, was well-received by attendees, providing a comfortable and inviting setting for students, coaches, and families. The event also served as an opportunity to attract incoming seventh graders to the wide range of activities offered at Fairmont High School, expanding their options beyond what they experienced in elementary school.
Mahoney emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities in high school, noting that there is an activity for every student to explore and enjoy. He encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, as participation in extracurricular activities can enhance their high school experience and provide valuable life skills.
Registration for activities is done online and requires sports physicals updated every four years by a doctor. For families without online access, a computer is available in the Fairmont High School office for completing registration forms. The event was a success, with over 200 students in attendance, showcasing the strong interest and engagement of the Fairmont High School community in extracurricular activities.
