Ohio awards $332K in grants for agricultural education

Share

Ohio officials have recently announced that the state has awarded $332,960 in Grow Ohio Grants to support local programs providing agriculture education opportunities for children. These grants aim to enrich the lives of children across Ohio by offering hands-on experiences in growing, harvesting, and preparing fresh food. The programs supported by these grants will not only educate children about where their food comes from but also inspire them to take an interest in the agriculture industry.

One of the key focuses of the Grow Ohio Grants is to support farm-to-school projects. This includes activities such as outdoor or indoor school gardening, hydroponics, and collaboration with local food producers. By incorporating these activities into school curriculums, children can learn valuable life skills while becoming more connected to Ohio’s rich agricultural heritage. Some awardees even plan to incorporate food produced through their programs into school meals, allowing all students to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Governor Mike DeWine expressed his support for the Grow Ohio Grants, emphasizing the importance of teaching young people about food production and agriculture. He highlighted the role of these programs in inspiring the next generation of Ohioans to feed their communities and contribute to the state’s agricultural industry. DeWine’s wife, Fran, is particularly passionate about educating children on where their food comes from and how it reaches their plates, making these grants a valuable resource for promoting agricultural education in Ohio.

The funding for the Grow Ohio Grants comes from the 2022 USDA State Agency Farm to School State Formula Grant. The first round of awardees met specific criteria, including a focus on workforce development, partnerships with local farmers and food producers, and serving children in communities with high percentages of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. The awardees included school districts and child care centers, all of whom are committed to providing agriculture education opportunities for children in Ohio.

Overall, the Grow Ohio Grants play a crucial role in supporting programs that educate children about agriculture, food production, and healthy eating habits. By offering hands-on experiences and incorporating farm-to-school projects into school curriculums, these grants help children develop valuable skills and a deeper appreciation for Ohio’s agricultural heritage. With the support of these grants, children across Ohio can learn, grow, and become more connected to the food they eat and the land it comes from.
