Ohio County Board of Education Gives Green Light to New Cell Phone Policy | Latest Updates on News, Sports, and Job Opportunities

The Ohio County Board of Education recently approved a new policy that prohibits cell phone use by students at Wheeling Park High School during instructional time. The policy, which was unanimously passed by board members, allows high school students to carry and use their phones at designated times such as the start of the day, between classes, at lunchtime, and at dismissal. However, students will be required to place their phones in holders within the classroom during instructional time.

The decision to implement this policy was made in an effort to promote self-discipline and respect for teachers among students. Superintendent Kim Miller emphasized that the goal is to create an environment where students can focus on learning without distractions. While the policy has received some negative feedback from the community, the majority of comments have been positive, with many parents and community members supporting the initiative.

The policy also extends to middle school and elementary students, who will not be permitted to use cell phones during the school day. Infractions of the rules will result in the confiscation of the phone, with specific punishments outlined in student handbooks. The new rules will go into effect at the start of the school year.

Board member Andy Garber expressed support for the policy, noting that many parents believe cell phones can be a significant distraction for students, especially at the middle school and elementary levels. By limiting access to cell phones throughout the day, educators hope to create a more focused learning environment for students.

In addition to the cell phone policy, the board also approved the replacement of the boiler at Wheeling Island Stadium, which was damaged during summer flooding. The new boiler, expected to be covered under a flood insurance claim, will cost $82,550. Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones explained that there is currently no hot water at the stadium, making the replacement a necessary and urgent repair.

Furthermore, the board voted to rescind a section of the employee leave policy that allowed employees to take unpaid sabbaticals for a year and return to their job the following year. This decision was made to address challenges in hiring temporary replacements for employees on sabbatical, as it creates uncertainty for the school district. Human resources director Susan Nolte noted that very few employees have returned after taking a one-year leave of absence.

Overall, the Ohio County Board of Education is focused on creating a positive and productive learning environment for students and staff. With the implementation of the new cell phone policy and necessary facility repairs, the board is committed to ensuring that schools in the district are well-equipped to support student success. The next board meeting is scheduled for August 26 at the board office in Elm Grove.
