As the Illini basketball season approaches, the State Farm Center in Champaign is gearing up for an increase in job opportunities. Brad Swanson, the assistant director of marketing at the SFC, noted that the success of last season’s men’s basketball games drew large crowds, necessitating the need for more staff. The rising popularity of women’s basketball has also contributed to the need for additional personnel at the center.
Swanson emphasized that the more competitive and exciting the games are, the more enjoyable it is to work at the State Farm Center. This not only provides job opportunities but also allows employees to witness the games up close and experience the behind-the-scenes action. With the increased demand for staff across various roles, the center is set to conduct open interview sessions on August 25, 26, and 27.
One of the primary job titles available is “event staff,” which includes ushers and other roles that assist guests during events. Additionally, the center is looking to hire security personnel, emergency medical services staff, and parking attendants. While EMS employees require licensing, security roles primarily involve monitoring the premises and reporting any issues to the authorities.
Parking staff, although not able to enjoy the entertainment inside the State Farm Center, are among the highest-paid positions available. Swanson highlighted the challenging nature of the job, as employees have to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, particularly during the basketball season from October to March. Despite the demanding roles, the center aims to provide opportunities for employees to rotate and experience working inside the stadium during games or performances.
The diverse range of employees at the State Farm Center includes full-time workers seeking additional income, retirees looking for part-time opportunities, and University of Illinois students. Swanson mentioned that over half of the seasonal staff in recent years have been students from the university. The center places a strong emphasis on hiring UI students, as it provides them with valuable experience in the live entertainment industry, potentially paving the way for future career opportunities in the field.
Overall, the job opportunities at the State Farm Center offer a unique experience for individuals to be part of the vibrant atmosphere surrounding Illini basketball games and other events. Whether it’s assisting guests, ensuring security, or managing parking, working at the center provides a chance to contribute to the excitement of live sports and entertainment while gaining valuable skills and experiences.
