Thames-based Never Surrender Boxing Health and Fitness seeks to grow by opening a new facility

The Never Surrender Boxing Health and Fitness Club in Thames, New Zealand, is making waves in the local sporting community by providing coaching and training opportunities to aspiring athletes. The club has partnered with elite athletes and previous New Zealand medal winners to offer top-notch coaching to its members, with the goal of nurturing potential sporting stars of the future.

According to club spokesperson Connaughton, the club is actively participating in competitions on the North Island circuit. However, limited facilities have hindered their ability to host events in their own community. Despite this setback, the club is determined to expand and build a new facility that will allow them to host their own events and attract boxers, coaches, and fans to the Thames-Coromandel district.

The club’s commitment to providing free access to coaching and equipment for Thames youth is commendable. Over the years, the club has secured funding from various sources, including gambling trusts, Grassroots, the Community Organisation Grants Scheme, and Sport New Zealand through Sport Waikato. Additionally, club members actively volunteer in the community to raise funds and support various initiatives.

The club’s origins can be traced back to Shaun George, a well-known figure in the New Zealand boxing world, who started training local enthusiasts in his garage. The club has since grown, producing notable success stories like Tamsyn Benny and Francis Waitai. Benny achieved medal success for New Zealand at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, while Waitai went on to become the undefeated New Zealand amateur champion and a professional boxer.

Connaughton, who joined the club to quit smoking, has played a pivotal role in securing funding and ensuring the club’s growth. He emphasizes the importance of providing access to sports for all members of the community, regardless of their financial situation. The club offers free training, equipment, and support to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in boxing and improve their physical and mental well-being.

Looking ahead, the club plans to utilize its new facility to introduce new classes and programs aimed at engaging more members of the community, including seniors and individuals struggling to get active. With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, the Never Surrender Boxing Health and Fitness Club is poised to continue making a positive impact on the Thames community and beyond.
