During the Made by Google 2024 event, the tech giant unveiled its highly anticipated next-gen wearable, the Pixel Watch 3. One of the standout features of this new smartwatch is the innovative Loss of Pulse Detection technology. This life-saving feature is designed to detect the loss of pulse, a critical event in which the heart suddenly stops beating.
According to the announcement, the Pixel Watch 3 utilizes a combination of sensors, AI, and signal-processing algorithms to monitor the wearer’s pulse. The Heart Rate sensor constantly tracks the pulse using a green light. In the event that the feature detects signs of pulselessness, it initiates a multi-step process to address the situation.
First, infrared and red lights are activated to search for any faint signs of a pulse, while motion sensors check for any movement from the wearer. If no movement is detected, a countdown with an alarm begins. If there is still no response, the smartwatch automatically places a call to emergency services and sends a message to the operator indicating the lack of pulse and the wearer’s location.
Google collaborated with cardiologists to develop the Loss of Pulse Detection feature, gaining insights into how this event manifests in the human body. The algorithm was trained using real-life user data from a diverse group of individuals to accurately detect loss of pulse incidents. Additionally, the company consulted with emergency medical service providers to ensure the technology was implemented effectively.
In a unique approach, Google even hired stunt actors to simulate instances of loss of pulse. These actors wore tourniquets to induce pulselessness and mimicked the movements of individuals experiencing a sudden stop in heart activity.
Loss of Pulse Detection will be available on the Pixel Watch 3 at launch in select European countries, including the UK, France, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Google plans to expand the feature to other global regions, pending clearance and evaluation by regulatory bodies like the US FDA. It is important to note that the technology is not intended for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or those requiring cardiac monitoring. It also relies on call functionality and cellular connectivity to contact emergency services.
