Mariah Myers, a standout athlete from St. Edmond, has been making waves in the world of high school sports. Recently named the 2023-24 Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota Messenger Area Female Athlete of the Year, Myers has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with both on and off the field.
Coach Bill Shirbroun of St. Edmond softball had nothing but praise for Myers, highlighting not just her athletic abilities but also her exceptional character. According to Shirbroun, Myers has a quality that positively impacts everyone around her, making her a true leader both on and off the field. Her presence in the program has elevated the team to new heights, inspiring her teammates to give their best effort.
During the past summer season, Myers played a pivotal role in helping the Gaels secure a North Central Conference championship, a Class 1A regional title, and a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. Individually, she had a stellar performance, earning unanimous all-league, all-district, and all-state honors. Her impressive stats include a batting average of .623, 14 home runs, 13 doubles, 44 runs scored, 35 RBI, and 23 steals. Myers led the state in on-base percentage and slugging, ranking among the top players in batting average and home runs.
Myers’ journey to success in high school softball began long before her time at St. Edmond. She played for Fort Dodge Senior High as an eighth grader and freshman, contributing to a Class 5A state title and runner-up finish. After taking a break from high school softball to focus on Iowa Premier, Myers returned to the prep level and made a significant impact on the Gaels’ program.
Looking ahead to her senior year, Myers is excited about the opportunity to play alongside her sister, Nana, who will be joining the St. Edmond softball team as an eighth grader. This unique experience will allow Myers to not only lead her team on the field but also mentor and inspire younger players, creating a special bond between siblings on the same team.
In addition to her success on the softball field, Myers has also excelled in track and field, placing second at the state meet in the shot put and qualifying in the discus. Her versatility and dedication to multiple sports showcase her commitment to excellence and her ability to thrive in various athletic disciplines.
Overall, Mariah Myers’ achievements as a student-athlete at St. Edmond exemplify the qualities of hard work, leadership, and sportsmanship. Her impact on the softball program and the school community as a whole is a testament to her exceptional talent and character, making her a deserving recipient of the Female Athlete of the Year award. As she continues to pursue her athletic and academic goals, Myers serves as an inspiration to aspiring young athletes and a role model for her peers.
