Unforgettable Memories from Bangladesh: My Recent Experience has Deepened my Love for India!

Share

The day Shaikh Haseena fled from Dhaka was a day of chaos and uncertainty in Bangladesh. The events leading up to her departure were marked by protests, violence, and political turmoil. As an outsider in the country, I witnessed firsthand the impact of these events on the people of Bangladesh.

My journey to Bangladesh began on a positive note, with my family accompanying me as I embarked on a teaching sabbatical at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong. The country’s vibrant culture and bustling cities captivated me, and I was eager to immerse myself in this new experience. However, the peaceful atmosphere soon gave way to unrest as tensions escalated in the wake of the government’s decision to increase job quotas for freedom fighters’ progeny.

The protests that followed were met with a harsh crackdown by the authorities, resulting in the loss of many lives. The internet blackout and curfew imposed in the aftermath of these events only added to the sense of fear and uncertainty that gripped the country. As a foreigner living in Chittagong, I felt the impact of these developments acutely, as the safety of myself and my students became a growing concern.

The situation reached a boiling point on the 5th of August when news broke that Shaikh Haseena had resigned and fled the country. The sense of relief that followed was palpable, as people took to the streets to celebrate the change in regime. For me, however, the events of that day marked the beginning of a harrowing journey to safety.

The process of leaving Bangladesh was fraught with challenges, from navigating the empty streets to securing a flight out of the country. The airport itself was a scene of chaos and confusion, as passengers scrambled to board the few available flights. The relief I felt upon landing in Kolkata was overwhelming, as I finally found myself in a place of safety and familiarity.

Reflecting on my time in Bangladesh, I am struck by the resilience and strength of the people I encountered. Despite the challenges they faced, they remained determined to fight for their rights and freedoms. As I returned to India, I was reminded of the importance of democracy and the value of peace in a world that is increasingly volatile.

In conclusion, the events that unfolded in Bangladesh serve as a powerful reminder of the fragility of democracy and the importance of upholding fundamental rights and freedoms. As I look back on my time in the country, I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the experiences that shaped me. Bangladesh will always hold a special place in my heart, as a country that taught me the true meaning of resilience and courage in the face of adversity.
